Layer 1 and device access

Physical Connections Lab

Learn which ports, cables, optics, and checks connect common network devices. Then test the same decisions with troubleshooting scenarios.

0 of 0 correct
RJ

Copper Ethernet

Use twisted-pair patch cables with RJ45 connectors for normal endpoint, phone, access point, and switch connections.

SFP

Fiber and Optics

Match speed, fiber type, connector, and wavelength at both ends. Duplex fiber must cross transmit to receive.

CLI

Console Access

Use USB console or a rollover console cable. Console access works without an IP address or an active Ethernet link.

Device identification

CCNA devices and their physical ports

Access switch

Connects devices inside a LAN and forwards Ethernet frames using its MAC address table.

Managed access switch Console RJ45 access ports, often PoE-capable SFP uplinks
Common ports
RJ45 access, SFP/SFP+ uplink, console, USB, dedicated management on some models
Look for
Link LEDs, PoE status, port speed, VLAN assignment, trunk state
Verify
show interfaces status, show vlan brief, show mac address-table

Router

Connects different IP networks and chooses a next hop using the routing table.

Branch or edge router Console Mgmt G0/0 G0/1 G0/2 SFP USB Routed Ethernet interfacesFiber WAN/LAN
Common ports
Routed RJ45, SFP/SFP+, console, USB console, management; older labs may use serial
Important
“LAN” and “WAN” are interface roles created by configuration, not universal port colors
Verify
show ip interface brief, show interfaces, show ip route

Firewall

Enforces security policy between zones and commonly provides NAT, VPN, and traffic inspection.

Firewall appliance MGMT OUTSIDE INSIDE DMZ HA/SYNC
Common ports
Management, outside, inside, DMZ/data, console, and high-availability links
Physical path
ISP or edge router to outside; LAN switch to inside; public servers may connect through a DMZ
Verify
Link state, negotiated speed, zone assignment, routes, NAT, and security policy

Wireless AP and controller

The AP bridges wireless clients onto the wired LAN. A controller can centralize AP configuration and forwarding.

Wireless APEthernet / PoE Cat5e/Cat6 PoE switchAccess or trunk port WLCService ports
AP ports
One or more Ethernet ports, usually PoE; console or USB may exist for local management
WLC ports
Management/service, console, and uplinks to the switching infrastructure
Verify
show power inline, access VLAN, trunk/native VLAN, DHCP, CAPWAP reachability

IP phone

Acts as a small Ethernet switch with separate switch-facing and PC-facing ports.

IP phone SW / LAN PC PoE switch connects hereWorkstation connects here
Switch port
Carries voice and data; the phone normally tags voice traffic and passes PC data traffic
Power
PoE from the switch or a compatible external power adapter
Verify
show interfaces switchport, show power inline, CDP/LLDP neighbor details

Patch panel and endpoint

The patch panel terminates permanent building cable. Patch cords connect it to switch ports and wall jacks.

Switch Patch panelPassive Wall jack PC
Permanent link
Patch panel to wall jack through in-wall solid-conductor cable
Channel
Adds patch cords at both ends; normal copper Ethernet channel limit is 100 meters
Test
Use a cable tester for wire map, opens, shorts, split pairs, and certification results

Physical topology diagrams

How the devices connect

Small office edge-to-endpoint path

Traffic enters through the ISP handoff, crosses the security edge, reaches the LAN switch, and then reaches endpoints.

Router-on-a-stick lab

One physical router interface carries multiple VLANs using an 802.1Q trunk. Router subinterfaces provide the VLAN default gateways.

Campus access, distribution, and core

Endpoints use copper at the access layer. Higher-capacity redundant fiber links commonly join access, distribution, and core switches.

Console connection checklist

  1. Connect the management computer to the console port.
  2. Open a serial terminal.
  3. Use 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit.
  4. Press Enter to display the prompt.
  5. Run show ip interface brief.

No-link troubleshooting order

  1. Check power and port LEDs.
  2. Reseat both cable ends.
  3. Test a known-good cable and port.
  4. Check shutdown and err-disabled states.
  5. Verify speed, duplex, optics, and fiber polarity.

Useful verification commands

  1. show interfaces status
  2. show ip interface brief
  3. show interfaces
  4. show interfaces transceiver
  5. show power inline
